Who really said it
The first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur that had been broken and then healed
No document, letter, lecture transcript or recording of Margaret Mead saying this has ever been produced. Quote Investigator finds the earliest known telling in Fearfully and Wonderfully Made (Zondervan, 1980, p. 68) by surgeon Paul Brand and Philip Yancey, where Brand recalls a Mead lecture he attended “early in my career” — published two years after Mead’s death, so she was never in a position to confirm or deny it. The exact sentence people quote today matches no published book: it is the wording of an anonymous internet retelling. Snopes confirms that retelling is right to credit the anecdote to physician Ira Byock, who tells it in The Best Care Possible (2012) — but in his book Mead answers simply “A healed femur.”
