George Orwell Fabricated attribution

The sentence appears in none of Orwell’s novels, essays, diaries or letters. Lead Stories found no trace of it in the University College London George Orwell Archive, and Snopes found no version predating Selwyn Duke’s 2009 column.

Later sharers Altered

Duke’s original capitalizes “Truth”; the Orwell-attributed versions lower-case it and frequently add “the” (“drifts from the truth”), as seen against Duke’s source column.

Why it sticks to Orwell

The aphorism reads like classic Orwell: terse, moral, aimed at a society that punishes honesty. Because Orwell is shorthand for truth-telling under pressure, the line found a natural — if false — home under his name, spreading across social media and opinion columns in the years after 2009.

The irony is pointed: a sentence about a society drifting from truth became a small case study in exactly that, circulating for years with its true author erased.
