The “ugly fact” was Lazzaro Spallanzani’s demonstration that properly sealed and heated infusions produced no life, refuting Buffon and Needham’s hypothesis of self-generating “organic molecules.”

Why people credit Darwin

Huxley was Charles Darwin’s closest public defender, so lines about hypotheses and inconvenient facts drift naturally onto Darwin’s name. The reassignment is more than a century old.

Charles Darwin Most common error

Darwin never wrote this. Quote Investigator documents the misattribution to Darwin appearing in a newspaper as early as 1901 ↗; it has since spread widely online because Huxley’s evolutionary advocacy is popularly conflated with Darwin’s.

Benjamin Franklin / John Tyndall Occasional

Quote Investigator also records the line being “implausibly assigned” to Benjamin Franklin (1948) and John Tyndall (1878) ↗ — neither originated it.

Herbert Spencer (variant) Paraphrase

Later paraphrases swap “theory” for “hypothesis” and “killed” for “slaying” — e.g. Francis Galton’s 1908 “a beautiful theory, killed by a nasty, ugly little fact,” which he attributed to Herbert Spencer, who heard it from Huxley ↗.

What the line means

Huxley delivered the line in the middle of a scientific debate about abiogenesis — whether living things can arise from non-living matter. He was recounting how the eighteenth-century naturalists Buffon and Needham had proposed an elegant theory of self-generating “organic molecules,” only for Lazzaro Spallanzani’s careful experiments to refute it almost at once.

The phrase has since become a favourite shorthand for the self-correcting nature of science: no matter how attractive an idea, a single well-established observation can bring it down.

Thomas Henry Huxley was a self-taught English biologist who became the era’s foremost champion of evolution by natural selection, earning the nickname “Darwin’s Bulldog.” A gifted lecturer and essayist, he coined the term agnostic and did pioneering work in comparative anatomy and palaeontology. His public addresses, including the 1870 British Association speech that produced this line, made him one of Victorian science’s most quotable voices — which is partly why his words are so often reassigned to his more famous friend Darwin.
