The real tragedy of the poor is the poverty of their aspirations
Adam Smith did not write this. The word ‘aspiration’ does not occur anywhere in The Wealth of Nations or The Theory of Moral Sentiments, and the Adam Smith Institute states flatly that he never said it. The line is usually re-credited to the Labour politician Ernest Bevin — but that attribution is itself undocumented: no speech, book, or dated source has been located, and Bevin’s own Wikiquote page does not list it.
