Fact-check

What gets mixed up

The attribution to Rand is sound. What goes wrong is the wording, and which Rand work people cite for it.

WordingThe popular trimmed version Trimmed

The sentence as printed begins “Remember also that the smallest minority on earth is the individual,” and has a comma after “individual rights.” Quote sites drop both. The meaning is unchanged (Wikiquote ↗).

Wrong bookThe Virtue of Selfishness (1964) Similar line

Her essay “Collectivized ‘Rights’” in The Virtue of Selfishness (p. 104) has a related aside: “(and the smallest minority on earth is the individual).” It does not contain the second sentence about “defenders of minorities” (Ayn Rand Lexicon: Individual Rights ↗). A citation to that book for the two-sentence quote points to the wrong passage.

Spoken or writtenThe December 1961 Ford Hall Forum lecture Unconfirmed

The essay is based on that lecture (ARI ↗), but no transcript we checked shows the sentence was said aloud that night. Cite the printed essay, not the speech.

Ayn Rand wrote it, in “America’s Persecuted Minority: Big Business,” Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal (1966), p. 61 (Ayn Rand Lexicon ↗).

Context

Why she wrote it

The essay’s argument is narrower than the quote suggests when it stands alone. Rand said that “liberal” intellectuals defended racial and religious minorities while ignoring “that small, exploited, denounced, defenseless minority which consists of businessmen.” Her target was antitrust law (Ayn Rand Lexicon, p. 44 ↗).

The “smallest minority” sentence comes near the end of that argument and pushes it as far as it goes: if minority rights matter, the individual is the smallest minority of all. Taken out of its setting, the line now circulates widely as a general statement about individualism and group rights.

The smallest minority on earth is the individual.
