There is no German source. The sentence is the tail of a longer paragraph that begins ‘If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it…’ and ends by declaring truth the greatest enemy of the State. It appears in English on a very large number of pages and in a good many books, and in every case without a citation. Randall Bytwerk, who runs the German Propaganda Archive at Calvin University and has read a great deal of what Goebbels actually wrote, knows of no evidence he said it. Several hundred German-language pages carry it; none give a source, and one of the earliest states that it is retranslated from English. That is the tell: the words did not travel from German into English. They were written in English.

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it... It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State. The paragraph as it usually circulates, abridged. No printing of it has ever been produced with a citation to a speech, diary entry, article or broadcast. Goebbels kept a voluminous diary that survives and has been published; the sentence is not in it.

How we traced it

  • The sentence almost never travels alone. It is the closing clause of a paragraph of four or five sentences, written in a register — ‘thus by extension’ — that belongs to English argumentative prose, not to translated German oratory. A quotation with no source but a fixed English paragraph around it is usually a modern composition.
  • Randall Bytwerk of Calvin University, whose German Propaganda Archive is the standard online collection of Nazi-era material in the original, calls it the most popular forged Goebbels quotation and reports finding no evidence for it. He and Quentin Schultze maintained a page specifically to slow its circulation False Nazi quotations ↗.
  • The argument from content is as strong as the argument from absence. Goebbels held publicly and repeatedly that propaganda had to be truthful — a position his biographer Peter Longerich describes as a belief in the ultimate victory of the truth. When he wrote about the big lie he was accusing the British of it, in attacks on what he called Churchill’s lie factory. A propaganda minister announcing that truth is the enemy of his own state would have been, on his own terms, a bad propagandist.
  • We give no date for when the fabrication began. Nobody has established one, and inventing a plausible year would repeat exactly the error this page exists to correct.

We do not assign a rights status, because there is nobody to assign it to. The text is an anonymous modern composition of unestablished date and authorship, which means its copyright term cannot be calculated — an unknown author is not the same as no author. In practice nobody is in a position to assert a claim, but that is a fact about enforcement rather than a licence. The attribution problem

Three things go wrong with this one, and they compound: a fabricated sentence, a real idea it is confused with, and a second fabrication that keeps it company.

Not Joseph Goebbels no source, ever

No speech, article, broadcast or diary entry. The published diaries are long and searchable and do not contain it. Bytwerk, who works in the German originals, reports no evidence for it.

English first retranslation

German versions exist but are uncited, and at least one of the earliest is explicitly marked as translated back from English. A genuine Goebbels line would have a German text with a date and a place; this one has an English paragraph and nothing behind it.

Hitler, describing others different text, different claim

The big-lie idea does appear in Mein Kampf — but as an accusation Hitler levelled at Jews, not as a technique he announced. Goebbels used it the same way, against the British. Neither man wrote a confession of method, which is what the forgery supplies.

'A lie told often enough becomes the truth' separate but related

That line is a different fabrication with a different history: it is usually credited to Lenin, has no Soviet source either, and its earliest datable attribution is a 1946 United States congressional publication. The two get quoted together and vouch for each other. Neither has a source — but they are not the same item and should not be cited as if one supported the other.

Unsourced and almost certainly composed in English. No German original has ever been produced, and Goebbels’s actual position was the opposite pose — that propaganda must be truthful the German Propaganda Archive ↗.

Context

Why it circulates

It is quoted to warn about propaganda, which is why the irony is uncomfortable: it is itself a piece of unsourced text that people repeat because it sounds authoritative and because the name attached to it makes checking feel unnecessary. The fabrication works on exactly the mechanism it claims to expose.

It also flatters the reader. A villain who announces his method is a villain you can see coming. The historical record is less convenient: the propagandists of the period claimed truth for themselves and accused their enemies of lying, which is harder to spot and considerably harder to answer.

A propaganda minister who announced that truth was his enemy would have been a bad propaganda minister. He claimed the opposite, loudly.

What Goebbels actually said about truth

He argued publicly and consistently that German propaganda had to be truthful, and treated that claim as a competitive advantage over British broadcasting.

His 1941 article on the big lie applies the charge to the British government, in language about what he called Churchill’s lie factory.

His biographer Peter Longerich, writing in 2014, characterises his position as a belief in the ultimate victory of the truth.

None of this makes him honest. It makes the fabricated sentence a poor description of how he operated.

The surviving diaries run to many volumes and are published. The sentence is not in them.

Joseph Goebbels ran the Nazi propaganda ministry from 1933 until his death in 1945, and left a diary of enormous length that has been published and indexed. That combination makes him the default author for any cynical maxim about manipulating a public — and it also makes the absence of this one meaningful. His real writing on the subject is worse in a different way than the fabrication suggests: he insisted that propaganda must be truthful, and used that insistence as a weapon. The forgery flatters him with a candour he never had.
