Not Archilochus. He is a fragmentary author, which is exactly what makes this checkable: roughly 300 fragments survive and are catalogued in standard editions, and readers who have gone through them find nothing resembling this. The wording is modern management-and-training English, not archaic Greek verse. It circulates most often as a Navy SEAL maxim, and in that form it is real and widely used — but no first speaker, unit, manual or date has ever been produced. We are not able to name one either, and we would rather say so than invent one.
