In context

Evoking the world of Che Guevara — Argentine-born Marxist revolutionary. Theme: "We cannot be sure of having something to live for unless we are willing to die for it". Atmospheric and restrained, cinematic directional light, a muted period-appropriate palette, fine grain and texture. Compose with generous empty space for the quote and a small credit line. No lettering in the image itself.

Minimalist

Minimalist editorial slide for the quote "We cannot be sure of having something to live for unless we are willing to die for it". Clean background, a single muted accent color, generous negative space, subtle paper or linen texture, no literal illustration — let the words carry it. Reserve clear space for a serif quote and a small credit line. No lettering in the image itself.

How we verified this

  • Wikiquote ↗ lists the line under Guevara’s main Quotes. Its only source is “As quoted in Wise Guys: Brilliant Thoughts and Big Talk from Real Men (2005) by Allan Zullo, p. 36,” a compilation, not a work by Guevara.
  • AZQuotes ↗ gives the same 2005 Zullo citation (p. 36) and nothing earlier or more primary.
  • By 7 October 2007 the line was going around in a forwarded list of “quotations from Che” on the OPE-L mailing list ↗. The list gave no source for any of its quotations.
  • A search of Quote Investigator ↗ for “willing to die for it” returns “Nothing Found,” so the specialists have not investigated this line.

The line can’t be tied to any identified work by Guevara, or to any published translation of one. So we make no claim about its copyright status. The only source cited for it is Allan Zullo’s 2005 compilation Wise Guys, which is itself a modern, in-copyright book.

Rights status is our research, not legal advice — and copyright varies by country and edition. For commercial or published use, confirm with the rightsholder. See terms.

Fact-check

Why the credit is shaky

Guevara is one of the internet’s most common targets for invented or unsourced quotations. This line spreads the usual way: the same English sentence passes from site to site, and none of them cites a source.

Quote sites & social mediaChe Guevara Unsourced

Goodreads ↗ credits it to “Che Guevara” with no book or speech, and notes that its quotes are added by the community and not verified by Goodreads. American University’s Contemporary Quotations ↗ also credits Guevara without giving a source.

Wikiquote & AZQuotesChe Guevara Compilation-only source

Wikiquote ↗ and AZQuotes ↗ both rest the attribution on Allan Zullo’s 2005 compilation Wise Guys, p. 36, a gift-book anthology published long after Guevara’s death in 1967. Neither names a speech, letter or book of his.

No speech, letter, diary or book by Guevara has been found that contains this sentence, and Quote Investigator ↗ has no article on it. Cite it as attributed to Guevara, not as something he is documented to have said.

Context

Why it sticks to Che

The idea fits Guevara’s public image, the revolutionary who died for his cause in Bolivia in 1967, and that fit is a large part of why the attribution sounds plausible. But a line that sounds like someone is not the same as a line they wrote. Every version in circulation is the same polished English sentence, with no Spanish original behind it and no occasion, date or audience attached.

His real writings are easy to check. The Marxists Internet Archive ↗ indexes English translations of his speeches, essays and books, from “Man and Socialism in Cuba” (1965) to the 1967 “Message to the Tricontinental.” That is where a genuine source would be expected to show up.

Sounds like Che. Not traced to Che.

What we checked

We searched Quote Investigator, Wikiquote’s sourced listing, major quote aggregators, and Spanish-language versions of the sentence. None produced a primary source or a Spanish original.

We also ran a text search over the shorter speeches and essays linked from the Marxists Internet Archive’s Guevara index and found no match. The book-length works there are only partly transcribed, and we did not search their chapters, so this search was not exhaustive. If an earlier, sourced appearance turns up, this page will be updated.
