Who really said it
We have two lives, and the second begins when we realize we only have one
The test for a Confucius quotation is the Analects, and this fails it. There is no passage in any of the twenty books that says this, and — the point that settles it — there is no Chinese original for it to be a translation of. Genuine Confucius lines can be checked character by character; this one has nothing underneath it. The most prominent place it appears is as the title of Raphaëlle Giordano’s 2015 French novel, Ta deuxième vie commence quand tu comprends que tu n’en as qu’une, a huge bestseller published in English as Your Second Life Begins When You Realize You Only Have One. We could not establish who said it first.
