King’s point is that time is neutral: it can serve justice or stagnation, so people must act rather than wait. The circulated Mandela quotation lifts only the second sentence and softens its wording.

The words originate with Martin Luther King Jr. in the Letter from Birmingham Jail ↗ (16 April 1963): “We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.”

Context

Why it mattered

King wrote the letter in the margins of a newspaper and on scraps of paper after his arrest during the 1963 Birmingham desegregation campaign. Eight local clergymen had published a statement calling the protests “unwise and untimely” and urging Black residents to wait.

The sentence about time is King’s answer: progress is not automatic, and “the time is always ripe to do right” means there is never a wrong moment to act justly. Stripped of that context and re-credited to Mandela, the line loses its specific argument against the politics of ‘wait.’
