Who really said it
What gets measured gets managed
No book, essay, lecture or interview by Drucker has ever been produced that contains this line, and researcher Danny Buerkli — citing the Drucker Institute’s own 2013 essay disowning the sibling maxim “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it” — reports that Drucker never said this one either ↗. The phrase was already a stock management saying before anyone thought to check — Gordon Bethune used it as a chapter title in From Worst to First in 1998, and when Simon Caulkin printed the best-known long version in The Observer in 2008 he called it a platitude that should have been throttled at birth, not a line of his own.
