Anster’s actual lines read “What you can do” (not “Whatever”) and place the couplet after “Are you in earnest? seize this very minute.” The widely shared “Whatever you can do” form is a later drift, and the prose passage (“Until one is committed…”) often attached to it belongs to mountaineer W. H. Murray (1951), not Goethe.

A translator’s words wearing Goethe’s name

This is a classic layered misattribution: a translator’s free paraphrase gets absorbed into the original author’s name, then reshaped and bundled with a third writer’s prose.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe misattributed

Goethe wrote a loosely related passage in the “Prelude at the Theatre” of Faust (1808), but not these words. Quote Investigator states plainly that “none of it was written by Goethe.”

Later paraphrasers misworded

Anster wrote “What you can do”; the swap to “Whatever you can do” is a modern drift, with the earliest known “Whatever” instance in Marie Corelli’s 1905 essay, per Quote Investigator.

W. H. Murray different author

The commitment passage frequently paired with the couplet was written by Scottish mountaineer W. H. Murray in The Scottish Himalayan Expedition (1951); Murray himself quoted Anster’s couplet at the end, and later readers mistook the whole block for Goethe (QI).

The memorable English lines are John Anster’s 1835 creation, inspired by — but not translated word-for-word from — Goethe’s Faust (Quote Investigator).

Inspired by Goethe, written by his translator

Goethe’s Faust opens with a “Prelude at the Theatre” in which a theatre manager urges the poet to stop deliberating and act. Goethe’s German is terse — roughly, ‘seize the possible boldly by the forelock’ — with no mention of genius, power, or magic.

When John Anster rendered the scene into English verse in 1835, he expanded the thought into a rousing couplet of his own invention. It was so quotable that it took on a life independent of both the play and its translator: by the late 19th century writers were crediting the lines directly to Goethe, and by 1951 they were fused with W. H. Murray’s prose on commitment.

John Anster was an Irish poet, lawyer, and academic who produced the first British translation of part of Goethe’s Faust into English (1835). Working in what critics called a ‘very free’ style, Anster often paraphrased rather than translated literally — and it was one such inventive paraphrase, the “Boldness has genius” couplet, that outlived his name and became the world’s most famous ‘Goethe’ quote he never wrote.
