1882–1956 · English playwright, novelist & creator of Winnie-the-Pooh
Alan Alexander Milne gave the world Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928), whose gentle prose has made him a magnet for feel-good lines he never wrote. His genuine closing scene — Christopher Robin and Pooh imagining themselves at “a hundred” and “ninety-nine” — is almost certainly the seed later reshaped, by other hands, into this ‘hundred minus one day’ internet quotation.
