Alexandre Dumas fils

Alexandre Dumas fils was the son of the novelist Alexandre Dumas père, author of The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers — a shared name that has caused two centuries of confusion. The son’s own reputation rests on La Dame aux Camélias (1848), the novel he adapted for the stage and which Verdi turned into La traviata. He wrote drama of social argument, and epigrams sharp enough that French dictionaries quoted him as an authority on the language while he was still alive.
