The joke is French and older than Einstein. Larousse’s Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle, in its entry for bêtise (stupidity), prints: “Une chose qui m’humilie profondément est de voir que le génie humain a des limites, quand la bêtise humaine n’en a pas”, credited to “Alex. Dum.” Quote Investigator ↗ credits Alexandre Dumas fils and finds no substantive evidence for Einstein, whose name is attached only by 1994.
