Carl Jung

1875–1961 · Swiss psychiatrist · founder of analytical psychology

Carl Gustav Jung was born on 26 July 1875 in Kesswil, Switzerland, and died at Küsnacht on 6 June 1961. A psychiatrist and psychotherapist, he founded the school of analytical psychology as a system distinct from Freudian psychoanalysis, built around individuation — the lifelong differentiation of the self out of conscious and unconscious material — along with the collective unconscious, archetypes and synchronicity. He was also a prodigious correspondent, and a great deal of the most quotable Jung comes not from his books but from private letters, collected and published only after his death.
