The Fugees — Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras — recorded ‘Killing Me Softly’ in 1996, and their version was a worldwide hit that introduced the song to a generation that had never heard Flack, let alone Lieberman. For many listeners it simply is a Fugees song. It is a cover of a cover: their record reaches back to Flack’s, and Flack’s reaches back to the 1972 original almost nobody remembers.
