John H. Clarke

John Hessin Clarke sat on the United States Supreme Court from October 1916 until September 1922, when he stepped down — in Slate’s summary of the episode, to live a less strenuous life of travel and contemplation. In January 1931 The American Magazine ran a profile that boiled his hard-won advice down to six numbered rules for happiness. One of those six outlived every opinion he wrote: it was copied onto a card in Indiana and became, a generation later, the most quoted line in American coaching.
