Johnny Cash (1932–2003) recorded ‘Hurt’ in 2002, near the end of his life, for American IV: The Man Comes Around. His version is genuinely his and genuinely devastating; the only error is chronological, the assumption that a song sung by a dying legend must have started with him. It started in 1994, with Nine Inch Nails.
