José González

Born 31 July 1978, Gothenburg; Swedish singer and guitarist of Argentine descent

González was born in Gothenburg to Argentine parents who left the country after the 1976 coup, and he plays nylon-string classical guitar with a quiet, close-miked voice. His reading of “Heartbeats” strips an electropop record down to fingerpicking and breath, and it is genuinely one of the great covers — the only error in the popular account is chronological, since it arrived on his 2003 debut Veneer, after The Knife’s original. He has since recorded with the band Junip and contributed music to films including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
