Nine Inch Nails is the industrial rock project founded by Trent Reznor in 1988. Reznor wrote and recorded ‘Hurt’ alone as the closing track of the 1994 album The Downward Spiral, and it stood for years as one of the band’s signature songs. That the original is now widely mistaken for a cover is a strange fate for a song this closely tied to its author.
