Sophocles

c. 497/496 – winter 406/405 BC · Athenian tragedian

Sophocles was one of the three Athenian tragedians whose work survives, and by some distance the most successful of them in his own lifetime: he entered thirty dramatic competitions, won twenty-four, and was never placed lower than second. Of more than 120 plays, seven survive complete, among them Antigone and Oedipus Rex. He lived into his nineties, which is why Plato could plausibly cast him as the authority on what old age does to desire.
