The Beatles

Formed Liverpool, 1960 · English rock band

The Beatles picked the record up at Brian Epstein’s NEMS shop and had been playing it live for years before they recorded it. Their version — taped at EMI Studios on 18 July 1963, John Lennon shredding his voice over George Martin’s piano — closes “With the Beatles” and is, by common consent, one of the fiercest things they ever put on tape. The only error in the popular memory is chronological: it is a cover, and they never pretended otherwise.
