Almost nothing is known about W. Fusselman beyond a single initial and a single sentence. He was a boy in Max S. Henig’s classes at the Essex County Vocational School in West Orange, New Jersey, when the students ran a campaign to promote a school library they had stocked themselves with donated books — books lent for four days at a penny. Henig sent 43 of their slogans to the Newark Public Library’s journal The Library, which printed eight of them in April 1926; Fusselman’s led the list, and it is the only one of the four still in circulation a century later — usually under somebody else’s name.
