1941–2006 · American soul singer · Atlantic Records
Wilson Pickett, born in Prattville, Alabama in 1941, was one of soul music’s defining voices, with more than fifty charting R&B records and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1991. He and Mack Rice had sung together in the Falcons before either went solo. His 1966 Atlantic recording of “Mustang Sally”, released as a single backed with “Three Time Loser” and also carried on the album The Wicked Pickett, reached No. 6 R&B and No. 23 pop and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000. Nothing about the record is a mistake — it is simply not the first one.
