Genuinely Mencken, and word for word. The sentence first appeared as §3 of the department “A Few Pages of Notes” in The Smart Set for January 1915, page 435 — printed under the headword “Vox Dei” and signed with the pen name William Drayham. Mencken collected it under his own name the following year in A Little Book in C Major (New York: John Lane Company, 1916). Both printings were read in the scanned originals.
