Beethoven really wrote this — it comes from his letter to a young admirer, Emilie M., sent from Teplitz on 17 July 1812. The familiar English (“force your way into its secrets … raise men to the divine”) is a faithful but slightly loose translation of his German; a more literal rendering is “penetrate its inner depths … only art and science raise man to the Godhead.”
