Hippocrates, Aphorisms, Section I, no. 6 — a real sentence of the Hippocratic corpus, still there in the Greek. This particular English, though, is the uncredited wording printed under his name in Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations from the tenth edition of 1876 onward — and it reads as an Englishing of the Latin school text Ad extremos morbos, extrema remedia exquisite optima, following that far more closely than any rendering made from the Greek.
