September 1938 — Vogue (Paris) runs a two-page spread of maxims by Chanel. The issue’s contents list, in the BnF’s digitised 1938 volume, reads “MAXIMES ET SENTENCES, par Gabrielle Chanel 56” — and the full-text index returns the sentence itself on the maxims page (Gallica, BnF ↗).
The magazine. The BnF’s bibliographic record confirms Vogue (Paris) was published by Condé Nast from 1920 and that the digitised run sits on Gallica (Catalogue général, BnF ↗).
2009 — Karen Karbo’s The Gospel According to Coco Chanel quotes the line in English as “fashion is always a reflection of its own time, but we forget this when it is stupid” — a different rendering of the same French (Quote Investigator, citing Karbo p. 223 ↗).
2021 — Quote Investigator publishes the trace, naming the September 1938 Vogue as the origin and noting the saying admits several English translations (quoteinvestigator.com ↗).

Chanel’s biographer Edmonde Charles-Roux argued that the polished maxims published under Chanel’s name in periodicals were shaped with the poet Pierre Reverdy — who corrected the aphorisms she wrote about her trade and added others of his own on wider subjects. Why it mattered
Chanel was fifty-five when the maxims ran — born 19 August 1883, so the September 1938 issue caught her a few weeks past that birthday. It was not a comfortable moment. Elsa Schiaparelli’s surrealist wit was drawing the acclaim, and Chanel’s excursion into Hollywood costume had gone badly. A spread of aphorisms in Vogue reads, in that light, less like a victory lap than a designer restating her creed while the spotlight moved.
Within a year the creed had to wait: Chanel closed the couture house at the outbreak of war in 1939 and did not reopen it until 1954. The sentence she published in 1938 turned out to describe her own career — a style that reflected its era, went quiet, and was not forgotten.
The line is Chanel’s. The English is somebody else’s.
Why the English keeps shifting
The French turns on two flexible words. “On l’oublie” is an impersonal construction that goes into English either actively (“we forget it”) or passively (“it is forgotten”) with equal warrant. And “bête” covers a range English splits up — silly, stupid, foolish, daft — with “foolish” the most literary of the options.
That is why three published renderings can all be faithful and none of them canonical. The version that spread is the most quotable one, which is usually how these things get settled.

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, called Coco, rose from a charity orphanage to become the couturière who made casual, unfussy elegance the feminine standard after the First World War — jersey, costume pearls, and the No. 5 scent. She registered as a couturière by 1919 and built her house at 31 rue Cambon in Paris, closing it at the outbreak of war in 1939 and reopening in 1954. She also wrote: aphorisms published under her name in magazines, of which this is one, though her biographers suspect the poet Pierre Reverdy had a hand in sharpening them.
