Who really said it
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime
There is no basis for the Lao Tzu credit — the line appears in none of his works, and both Quote Investigator and Wikiquote list it as misattributed. QI traces the adage to Ritchie’s 1885 novel Mrs. Dymond (“if you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour. If you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn”); the familiar “feed him for a lifetime” wording is a later 20th-century evolution with no single authored source.
