Who really said it
He who has a why to live can bear almost any how
The aphorism is genuinely his — Götzen-Dämmerung (Twilight of the Idols), written 1888 and published January 1889, ‘Sprüche und Pfeile’ (Maxims and Arrows) No. 12: “Hat man sein warum? des Lebens, so verträgt man sich fast mit jedem wie?” The twist is the English: the wording everyone quotes is not from any translation of Nietzsche. It descends from Ilse Lasch’s 1959 translation of Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, where Frankl quotes him.
