He who learns but does not think, is lost
It is a genuine saying of Confucius, preserved as verse 15 of Book 2 (Wei Zheng) of the ‘Analects’ — 學而不思則罔,思而不學則殆. This exact English wording is Arthur Waley’s 1938 translation; other scholars render the same line quite differently.
