If I Had a Single Flower for Every Time I Think of You, I Could Walk Forever in My Garden

Not Alfred, Lord Tennyson — probably Claudia Adrienne Grandi Claudia Adrienne Grandi
Attribution status: Disputed Reuse status: Rights unconfirmed

Tennyson has no documented claim to this line at all. Quote Investigator could not find it anywhere in his work, and the earliest link to his name that it located is a 2005 craft book about making greetings cards. The line itself is older than that credit: it appears, with nobody’s name attached, in a Valentine’s advertisement in The Register of Santa Ana, California, on 14 February 1985, and the first ascription to a named person comes in 1992, to the poet Claudia Adrienne Grandi. QI believes Grandi should receive credit but is explicit that it has not found the poem in a volume of hers, so this is a best-evidence call rather than a settled one.

Earliest ascription to a person

Verdict
Not Tennyson — credit most likely Grandi’s, wording not settled

If I had a single flower for every time I think of you, I could walk forever in my garden

That is the wording in the 1992 Rockmart Journal item, which is both the earliest instance matching the line as it circulates today and the earliest to name an author. The 1985 advertisement is worded differently: “IF I HAD A SINGLE FLOWER FOR EVERYTIME I THINK ABOUT YOU I WOULD WALK FOREVER IN MY GARDEN.”

How we verified this

  • Quote Investigator’s investigation ↗ states plainly that “the ascription to Alfred Lord Tennyson has no substantive support,” and that “based on current evidence QI believes that Claudia Adrienne Grandi should receive credit.”
  • QI is equally clear about the limits of that call: it “is not certain of the precise phrasing because he has not found the poem directly in a volume written by Grandi,” and notes that the early instances differ in word choice. We have carried both of those caveats onto this page rather than tidying them away.
  • We checked Tennyson’s side independently. Wikiquote’s page for Alfred, Lord Tennyson ↗ carries his sourced verse at length, and we searched its full raw wikitext for both “single flower” and “forever in my garden”: neither phrase appears anywhere on it.
  • QI records that a 1975 U.S. Copyright Office catalogue gives Claudia Adrienne Grandi as a pseudonym for Claudia Adrienne Demilia, with a 1974 book credited to the pen name, and that a 1988 New London, Connecticut paper described her as “a sophomore at Manchester Community College.”

No rights status can honestly be asserted. The earliest documented appearance is an unattributed 1985 newspaper advertisement, and Quote Investigator has not located the poem in any volume by Grandi, so there is no identified first publication to assess. If the line is Grandi’s it is a modern work and would be under copyright; it is quoted here as a short excerpt for identification and verification.

Rights status is our research, not legal advice — and copyright varies by country and edition. For commercial or published use, confirm with the rightsholder. See terms.

Often misattributed

A Victorian Poet Laureate is a convenient signature for an anonymous Valentine, and that is roughly what happened here.

The usual creditAlfred, Lord Tennyson Not Tennyson

Quote Investigator found “no substantive support” for the credit and could not locate the line in Tennyson’s work. The earliest link to his name that QI found is a 2005 craft book, The Ultimate Guide to the Perfect Card. We also searched Wikiquote’s sourced Tennyson page ↗ in full and the line does not appear.

Who deserves creditClaudia Adrienne Grandi best evidence, not proof

The first ascription to any named person is The Rockmart Journal of 27 May 1992, which prints the line as “written by Claudia Adrienne Grandi.” QI believes she should receive credit, while stating that it has not found the poem in a volume of hers.

The real person behind the nameClaudia Adrienne Demilia pen name, not a different person

QI cites a U.S. Copyright Office catalogue covering January–June 1975 recording Grandi as a pseudonym for Claudia Adrienne Demilia, with a 1974 book credited to the pen name.

How far the wrong credit spreadA BBC News Magazine list of “Tennyson: 10 essential quotes” amplifier, not origin

QI’s chronology includes a 2011 BBC News Magazine list carrying the line as Tennyson’s. We could not reach the BBC page ourselves from this run, so we record it as QI documents it rather than linking it.

Best evidence: an anonymous Valentine of 1985, credited from 1992 onward to the poet Claudia Adrienne Grandi, and never Tennyson’s — Quote Investigator’s full chronology ↗.

Context

Why it mattered

The chronology QI assembles is a small history of how greeting-card verse acquires a pedigree. The line circulates unsigned through Valentine’s columns and funeral notices for years, picks up Grandi’s name in 1992, turns up in Chicken Soup for the Girlfriend’s Soul in 2004, and only then acquires Tennyson — in a book about making cards.

Once a Poet Laureate’s name is attached, the line stops reading as anonymous sentiment and starts reading as literature, which is precisely why the wrong credit sticks.

The Tennyson credit arrived two decades after the line was already circulating.

QI’s chronology also records a 2008 collection crediting a garbled “Claudia Ghandi,” and a 2001 Blue Mountain Arts collection carrying a different Grandi piece — which is the sort of trail a real jobbing poet leaves, and part of why QI lands on her.

About Claudia Adrienne Grandi

Claudia Adrienne Grandi

American poet · a pen name recorded for Claudia Adrienne Demilia

Almost nothing is firmly established about Claudia Adrienne Grandi, and that is part of the story. Quote Investigator cites a U.S. Copyright Office catalogue of 1975 recording the name as a pseudonym for Claudia Adrienne Demilia, with a 1974 book, Riding on Gardenias Embracing Rainbows, credited to the pen name; a 1988 Connecticut newspaper described her as a sophomore at Manchester Community College reading her poetry. Her verse appeared in Blue Mountain Arts collections, the kind of greeting-card anthology through which an unsigned line can travel for years before anyone asks who wrote it.
