Wikiquote lists this among Galileo’s misattributed quotations ↗ and gives the real source: Roger Bacon’s Opus Majus, written for Pope Clement IV in 1267. Opening Part IV, on the power of mathematics, Bacon writes “Et harum scientiarum porta et clavis est mathematica” — “And of these sciences the door and key is mathematics” — and goes on to complain, in the same breath, that neglecting mathematics had by then wrecked thirty or forty years of study across Latin Christendom. The sentence is on p. 97 of J. H. Bridges’s 1897 edition ↗. Galileo was born in 1564.

Bridges prints a marginal gloss beside this passage naming mathematics the key of the sciences; the scan’s OCR of that gloss is too broken to quote. Wikiquote renders the first sentence “And of these sciences the door and key is mathematics” — note that Bacon’s porta et clavis is “door and key,” in that order, which the popular English version reverses.

  • Wikiquote’s Galileo page files the line under “Misattributed” ↗, noting it “as quoted in Building Fluency Through Practice and Performance (2008)…, but in fact a quotation by Roger Bacon: Et harum scientiarum porta et clavis est Mathematica… from Bacon’s Opus Majus (1267).”
  • The Latin checks out against the edition itself. The full text of Bridges’s 1897 volume 1 ↗ opens Part IV, Chapter I with “Et harum scientiarum porta et clavis est mathematica, quam sancti a principio mundi invenerunt” — the preceding page carries the running head “96 OPERIS MAJORIS PARS TERTIA,” so the passage falls on p. 97, the page Wikiquote’s own reference points to.
  • Bacon finished the Opus Majus in 1267, at the request of Pope Clement IV; Wikipedia dates him c. 1219/20 to c. 1292 ↗. Galileo was born on 15 February 1564 ↗ — some 297 years after the sentence was written.
  • The popular English wording is not a quotation from any edition we could trace: it reverses Bacon’s “door and key” to “key and door” and drops the “of these sciences” that ties the sentence to the four scientiae magnae Bacon has just named. No first appearance for it has been identified.

No status is asserted for the English sentence in circulation, because its wording cannot be traced to any identified translation or first publication — and a line that merely sounds medieval is not thereby public domain. The underlying source is another matter: Bacon’s Latin dates from 1267 and the text quoted above is from J. H. Bridges’s edition of 1897, both long out of copyright in the United States and free to quote.

Galileo is a magnet for anything that sounds like a manifesto for mathematical science. This one was written before the University of Oxford had a printing press, let alone a telescope.

This is the printing Wikiquote cites for the Galileo attribution ↗ — a classroom fluency anthology, the kind of book that circulates a line to thousands of readers with a famous name attached and no source. It is where the credit was documented, not necessarily where it began.

The thought is genuinely a founding one for mathematical science — and it belongs to a thirteenth-century Franciscan who complained that neglecting mathematics had wrecked a generation of Latin learning. You can read him saying it in the 1897 Latin edition ↗.

Context

What Bacon was actually arguing

The sentence is not an aphorism about school subjects. It opens the fourth part of the Opus Majus, where Bacon has just named four scientiae magnae without which, he says, the other sciences cannot be known at all — and mathematics is the door and key to those four. His complaint is institutional and specific: neglect of mathematics has, he writes, wrecked Latin Christendom’s entire course of study for the past thirty or forty years — and worse, that those ignorant of it do not perceive their own ignorance and so never look for a remedy.

That is a sharper claim than the version in circulation. “Mathematics is the key and door to the sciences” sounds like a motto for a classroom wall. Bacon was writing a report to a pope about what he thought had gone wrong with European learning, and naming the fix.

How the Opus Majus came to be written

Bacon sent the Opus Majus to Pope Clement IV in Rome in 1267, at the pope’s own request; Wikipedia gives the background and dates him c. 1219/20 to c. 1292 ↗. It is less a treatise than a very long argument for funding — a survey of what was wrong with contemporary learning, organised around the causes of error, the value of languages, mathematics, optics, experimental science and moral philosophy.

John Henry Bridges’s Latin edition (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1897) is freely readable at the Internet Archive ↗. Part IV, where this sentence sits, dominates that first volume: its running heads span more than ten times as many lines of text as Parts I, II or III.

Roger Bacon

c. 1219/20–c. 1292 · English Franciscan friar, philosopher and polymath

Roger Bacon studied at Oxford, lectured on Aristotle at Paris, joined the Franciscans, and then spent years arguing, mostly to people who had not asked, that Christian learning was in a bad way and that mathematics and languages were the way out of it. The Opus Majus was his case for the prosecution, written at speed for Pope Clement IV in 1267. Its fourth part is a sustained argument that mathematics underpins every other science — which is why the sentence people hand to Galileo is his, and why he would have been pleased to hear it repeated and irritated to lose the credit.
