Campbell wrote it in Myths to Live By, first published by Viking Press in 1972. The sentence sits in a short passage on Freud and reads, in full, “Myths, so to say, are public dreams; dreams are private myths.” The wording that circulates online is that sentence with Campbell’s hedging aside — “so to say” — trimmed out.
