The idea is genuinely Orwellian — he wrote that civilization depends on “other men… there to guard and feed” it — but this exact sentence is not his. The wording was written by critic Richard Grenier in an April 1993 column, as his own summary of Orwell’s view, with no quotation marks ↗. Only later did others put it in quotes and hang it on Orwell.
