Who really said it
Pride comes before a fall
The thought is genuinely biblical, but the exact words are not scripture. The closest verse, Proverbs 16:18, reads in the 1611 King James Version: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” The familiar one-liner compresses those two clauses into one and modernises ‘goeth’ first to ‘goes’ and then to ‘comes’ — so no Bible printed the sentence as it is usually quoted.
