Why it mattered
Franklin was nineteen and studying at Cambridge when her father, Ellis, wrote to complain that science had given her a “completely one-sided” outlook and that she treated it almost as a religion. This sentence is her rebuttal: science is not a walled-off discipline to be “kept separate from everyday existence,” but part of the fabric of a whole life.
In the same letter she sketched a secular, humanist faith — the conviction that by doing our best we improve the lot of humankind — making the line as much about how to live as about how to do research.

Franklin identified as culturally Jewish but was not religious; the 1940 letter is one of the clearest surviving statements of her worldview, which is why humanist organisations and biographers alike return to it. Rosalind Franklin (1920–1958) was a British chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose diffraction images of DNA — notably “Photograph 51” — were pivotal to Watson and Crick’s model of the double helix, and who also did foundational work on the structure of coal and of viruses. She wrote this line at nineteen, while a student at Newnham College, Cambridge, in reply to her father’s worry that science had made her one-sided.
