Parker made the joke about Katharine Hepburn in The Lake over the winter of 1933–34, and admitted as much years later: asked about it by Garson Kanin she said, “Oh, I said it all right.” What she never did was write it down. Every surviving 1934 printing is somebody else reporting her, and each one words it differently — so the exact sentence quoted today cannot be pinned to Parker’s own pen.
