Who really said it
Just give them two and two and let them add it up
Wilder said it aloud in a seminar at the American Film Institute; the transcript was published as the Billy Wilder chapter of Conversations with the Great Moviemakers of Hollywood’s Golden Age at the American Film Institute, edited by George Stevens Jr. (Alfred A. Knopf, 2006), quote page 320, where Quote Investigator verified it on paper ↗. One honest complication: Wilder was voicing advice he said he had learned from Ernst Lubitsch, and Quote Investigator has found no citation in which Lubitsch spoke these words — so the sentence is documented as Wilder’s spoken line, credited by Wilder to someone else.
