The author is right and the page reference is right: this is the opening sentence of Chapter 1 of Competitive Strategy (The Free Press, New York, 1980), on p. 3. But the sentence Porter actually printed reads “The essence of formulating competitive strategy is relating a company to its environment” — the version in circulation has lost the one adjective the whole chapter is built on.
