Wikiquote lists it under “Disputed” ↗, noting that it is attributed on quote sites without a source, that Google Books turns up no examples in any 20th-century book, and that the earliest example its editors located is a Usenet post of 11 April 1990. The idea is broadly Platonic; the wording is not his, and no author for it has been identified.
