Carlin taped Doin’ It Again over two nights at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on 12–13 January 1990. The bit this line closes is a straightforward complaint that there are too many stupid people and you meet them all day — it lands in the stretch where his act stopped being about words and started being about people.
The joke works because it dresses contempt as arithmetic. It sounds like a statistic, and it arrives with the cadence of one, which is exactly why it detached from the routine and went to live on coffee mugs. The Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics album that came out of the same performance in November 1990 even has a track titled “Some People Are Stupid.”

Pedants like to point out that the line quietly swaps the median for the mean: it is the median that has half the population below it, not the average. This is an observation about the joke rather than a correction anyone needs — the slippage is the gag. Carlin was not doing statistics, and the sentence would be worthless if he were.

Born in New York City on 12 May 1937, George Carlin spent five decades remaking American stand-up — from clean-cut 1960s television guest to the counter-cultural language obsessive of “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television.” He recorded fourteen HBO specials between 1977 and 2008 and won five Grammy Awards, and by the 1990s his act had hardened into the bleak, precise misanthropy this line belongs to.
