Quote Investigator traces this deathbed gag to an unnamed condemned prisoner at Newgate in the Staffordshire Advertiser of 13 June 1795, and concludes the anecdote is probably fictional. It was fastened onto Machiavelli only in 1981, over four centuries after his death, and appears nowhere in his own writings.
