Too much whiskey is barely enough
There is no located Twain source for either form of this line. The version that actually circulates is longer — ‘Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough’ — and the short one you see on bar chalkboards is a clipping of it. We could not find either wording in Twain’s published books, sketches, speeches, letters or notebooks, and no site that carries it produces a citation. The furthest back the paper trail goes is a 2014 Skyhorse anthology, Mark Twain on Common Sense, which prints it on page 37 with no source of its own — a compilation, not evidence.
