Who really said it
We're made of star stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself
Sagan really did say this, and the two sentences really do run back-to-back. They are the closing beat of his opening monologue in episode 1 of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, “The Shores of the Cosmic Ocean,” first broadcast on PBS on 28 September 1980 — both Quote Investigator and Wikiquote’s sourced section locate the line there. What is not his is the phrase “star stuff” itself, which was in print decades before he was born.
