The maxim first appears on page 131 of Meditations in Wall Street (New York: William Morrow & Co., 1940), a book of aphorisms published anonymously with an introduction by Albert Jay Nock; the author was later identified as the stockbroker Henry Stanley Haskins. Quote Investigator ↗, quoting Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier, records that no evidence can be found that Emerson said or wrote these words — and QI's own earliest located Emerson credit is 1980, ninety-eight years after Emerson died in 1882.
