The popular one-liner “Wonder is the beginning of wisdom” compresses and reworks this passage. The swap is defensible — philosophia literally means ‘love of wisdom’ — but it is a paraphrase, not a translation of what Plato wrote.

How it gets mis-cited

This one isn’t attached to the wrong person so much as attached to the wrong words. The sentiment is authentically Socratic, but it is routinely quoted as if it were a verbatim line from Socrates himself.

Socrates left no writings; the words are Plato’s, and the surviving text (Theaetetus 155d ↗) reads “wonder is the only beginning of philosophy,” not “wisdom.”

Aristotle rare

Aristotle does tie wonder to the origins of inquiry (Metaphysics 982b ↗: “through wonder that men…began to philosophize”), but his phrasing is not this line either.

The idea is genuinely Socratic by way of Plato’s Theaetetus ↗; the word “wisdom” is a modern paraphrase of “philosophy” — which, literally, already means ‘love of wisdom.’

Context

Why it mattered

In the Theaetetus, Socrates and the gifted young mathematician Theaetetus are trying to define knowledge itself. When Theaetetus confesses that puzzling over these questions makes his head spin, Socrates reassures him: that dizzy feeling of wonder (Greek thaumazein) is not a weakness but the very mark of a philosopher.

Socrates seals the point with a pun on myth: the rainbow-goddess Iris, messenger between gods and mortals, was said to be the daughter of Thaumas — ‘Wonder.’ Philosophy, he suggests, is likewise born of wonder. Aristotle took up the same claim in the Metaphysics, and it echoes down through Descartes, Whitehead and beyond as a founding motto of Western thought.

On ‘philosophy’ vs ‘wisdom’

The paraphrase survives because it is essentially faithful: philosophia is a compound of philo- (loving) and sophia (wisdom). To say philosophy begins in wonder is, near enough, to say the pursuit of wisdom begins in wonder. The quote crosses from ‘accurate’ to ‘paraphrase’ only when it is presented inside quotation marks as Socrates’s own words.

Socrates was an Athenian philosopher and the founding figure of Western moral philosophy. Famously, he wrote nothing — everything we have of him comes secondhand, chiefly through the dialogues of his student Plato and the writings of Xenophon. The saying about wonder is put in his mouth by Plato in the Theaetetus, a dialogue on the nature of knowledge, where wonder (Greek thauma) is named as the root from which philosophy grows.
