1809–1894 · American physician, poet and Harvard anatomy professor
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. was a Boston physician and writer who held the Parkman Professorship of Anatomy and Physiology at Harvard Medical School from 1847 to 1882, serving as dean until 1853. He was also one of the founding voices of The Atlantic Monthly — he supplied the magazine’s name and wrote for it for decades, most famously the Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table columns, monthly instalments of invented boarding-house table talk. He was the father of the Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., a resemblance of names that has quietly rerouted a great many of the father’s sentences to the son.
