Who really said it
I awoke, only to find that the rest of the world is still asleep
The real sentence is neither first-person nor by Leonardo. In his 1910 study Leonardo da Vinci and a Memory of His Childhood (English trans. 1916), Freud described Leonardo as “a man who awoke too early in the darkness, while the others were all still asleep” — a simile he expressly credited to Dmitry Merezhkovsky. The popular “I awoke…” version is an anonymous modern rewrite found in none of Leonardo’s notebooks. As Leonardo scholar Martin Kemp put it, “about 80% of the Leo ‘quotes’ on the internet are not by him. This is not amongst the 20%.”
